Does TV hurt babies?
Dear Friends,
Welcome Back! I'm the Motivated Mommy. Today we're going to be discussing television's effect on children. This is a key issue that many women have strong opinions about. However, with Disney's recent recall of little Einsteins, I felt it was a fitting topic to address.
Can TV be helpful?
Yes! If used properly, the TV can be helpful. If you put on "Classical Baby" which uses stimulating colors and carefully selected classical music.. or for that matter.. just put on the classical music channel. Then, don't allow the baby to just sit and watch it. Allow it to be background stimulation. Then, the baby gets the benefit of stimulating all the senses while engaging in play. He/she can look up and see colors and moving objects and hear the different notes, tones, and volume differences in the music, while engaging in muscle and touch play. The key is supervision. If your child starts to solely "watch" the tv.. it's your job to distract him/her away from the program and back into play. I also recommend radio instead of tv, even though it's not as visually stimulating.. it does offer less temptation.
Can TV be harmful.
ABSOLUTELY! Many people don't know this, but your child is establishing his/her attention span at this age. Most tv shows only require 5-10 min of attention between commercials. That is tragic. Music videos are equally as short. Your child is modeling his/her attention span by how long he/she has to concentrate between these things. Then, when the child gets to school and is require to focus much longer, it's nearly impossible and must re-train themselves. Many experts believer that this is why children are showing record numbers of things like ADHD. It does effect your child.
Also, there are multiple studies out there that suggest that it also effects their free thinking and ability to be creative. IN a video game or tv show, they don't have to use their imaginations. They just engage in a pre-designed world. For tots, it's no different. Instead of figuring out how to put the circle in the right hole or match colors to make a beautiful artwork.. they are watching artworks on tv. It's no wonder we're seeing a lack of creativity in the school systems.
In conclusion, how your child spends his/her time matters! TV isn't evil, but it's harms greatly out weight it's benefits. So, use it as background noise. Remember that your child needs you. As a parent, the companionship and supervision time with your child can be very bonding and rewarding for both of you!

Here are five fun crafts that will keeps your kids smiling and happy this summer.
Balloon Bird Houses
This craft is fun for kids of all ages. If they are old enough to participate without sticking anything in their mouth.. then they are old enough to make bird houses! Here's what you do. First, gather: several ballons, sissors, glue, a newspaper, and a big bowl with 1/2 a cup of water. Step One: Shred your newspaper into little strips. That's fun!
Step Two: Mix your 1/2 cup of water with 1 bottle of glue and stir it up.
Step Three: Blow up your ballon.
Step Four: Take one newspaper strip and dip it in the glue water. Then, put it on your balloon.
Step Five: Repeat step four until the balloon is completely covered with two layers of newspaper
Step Six: let it dry over night
Step Seven: Have an adult stick a needle in an pop the balloon.
Step Eight: Have an adult cut a small hole for the bird house door. (Adults remember to remove the broken balloon.
Step Nine: The kids get to decorate the bird house with markers or paint. Paint is less likely ot result in a broken birdie house. But, whatever you feel the most comfortable with.

Mood Boards
Increasing the communication and openness in your family can be fun and crafty. First, you'll need to gather the following materials: Lots of colored paper in various colors, glitter, glue, scissors, and markers.
Step One: Cut your paper into half sheets.
Step Two: Take one piece of paper and write "Today I feel" and decorate it with pictures that represent you as a person. Maybe hobbies or favorites.
Step Three: Take five sheets of paper. On each sheet write a different emotion. Then, decorate that piece of paper to match that emotion. For examples, I might right "sad" and draw sad faces or things that make me sad.
Step Four: Go around the group and discuss emotions and why you picked each emotion and drew each picture.
Step Five: Go hang them on your door. Align "today I feel" with your current mood indicator like "happy". Talk about updating it daily to show everyone your mood.
Step Six:Talk about why knowing someone's mood might help.
Step Seven: Remember to check mood board and ask about someone's mood. "Why did you put sad today, is there anything wrong?"

Freebies and Other Cheap Things for Mommies
If you're anything like me, the rising cost of living makes having a baby.. really expensive. You want to buy them all the cute toys and cloths, but when you're also paying high prices for bottles, diapers, and formula.. it can get a little discouraging. But, take heart! The week's blog is dedicated to finding the coupons and freebies that make our lives as mommies easier and free up our wallets for the fun things like toys and cute baby cloths!
Baby Freebie Mania is LOADED with tons of fun things. Printable coupons from the manufacturers. Free samples, so that you can try a product before you waste any of your hard earned money on it... and of course there is a fun forum where you can chat with other moms who like to be thrifty so that they can provide their children with the best!!
Here's the link:
http://www.freemania.net/samples/baby.htm
WIC- It stands for Women, Infants, and Children. If you haven't checked this out, you should! It's completely free complimentary help courtesy of your state government. You can get all sorts of stuff free from milk, egg, cheese, and tuna to formula, baby water, etc. I actually use WIC and save an average 300-350 dollars every single month! It's well worth the paperwork and time to check it out.

Free Baby Stuff is a company that prides itself in providing links to baby freebies that don't take a lot of time or effort to sign up for. I was really surprised at the variety of products that you could get free on this site. You didn't ever have to give out payment information or stress over long drawn out forms. It was a fun and rewarding experience, for me.
Here's the Link:

Craigslist is an exciting option when looking for freebies. The idea here is that you can trade the stuff that your baby doesn't want or doesn't need anymore for things that he/she wants or needs now. For examples, if my baby has grown out of her 0-3 months cloth. I might trade four 0-3 dresses for four 6-9 month paid of pants. Moreover, they also trade toys, baby furniture, and other accessories. It's all completely free!! Why hang onto stuff that you don't need anymore when you could trade it for new stuff.
Heres' the Link:
craigslist.com
Finally, to get free baby stuff, you can sign up for all the coupons and freebies that the major companies are offering by googling "free baby toys" or "free baby stuff". Thousands of sites will pop up, allowing you to insert your e-mail address. You will get coupons, but fair warning, you will also get major amounts of spams. So, I have included below a few sites that have promised to send coupons without selling your personal information (side note- they didn't promise me.. it was a claim made on their site)

In the end, you don't have to pay full price and stress about how to save enough money to buy your child the cuter things in life. You just have to be a little thrifty and slightly creative in your search for discounts! I hope that these links helped..
Until Next Time..

I'm the Motivated Mommy!
Diaper Dookie and All Things Poopy
Today, we are rising to ask the all important question that every American Mother wants to know...
Are all diapers created equal?
Recently, a new mommy asked me, "Which type of diapers should I use?"
Many new moms stand in front of the vast diaper isle unsure of how each brand is different. After all, there is no button where you can phone and friend and find out their experiences with each type. So, allow me to be your guide through the exciting, and sometimes messy world of baby diapers.
Parents Choice
This brand of diapers has an ironic name, as every single mother I've ever asked said that they would never chose this brand if their lives depended on it! This diaper leaks urine and poop, even in small doses! Especially in infants and young babies (0-3 mo). This diaper is ill fitting, not absorbent, and just plain messy. When children hit the 3-6mo mark, they seem to work slightly better, but not by much.
Personal Experience
After trying this diaper for a week, I can honestly say that parents choice makes you a fashion don't because numerous times, I was holding my diaper and poo or wee leaked out of the diaper and onto my shirt. Once, I went to pick my daughter up from her car seat only to reach in and find a puddle of poop that had gotten everywhere when her parents choice diaper failed to hold anything in! It was a miserable week, and in the end.. this parents.. doesn't chose parents choice.
Huggies
These are a step up from parents choice! For the price you pay, they better be! They do hold in poop fairly well. This is a plus for many mommies and daddies everywhere. However, they do have a downside, they don't adjust well to babies movement, so they leak urine often. I also found that you had to change your baby often because they are only mildly absorbent. Some people wouldn't consider this a bad thing, after all, frequent diaper changing only benefits the cleanliness of the child. However, this logic fails to consider the price of diapers during these hard times. When you change a diapers every thirty minutes or more, you're wasting time and money. Some part of me wonders if it's a bit of a conspiracy to ensure that their diapers sell better. But, that's probably simple paranoia. A more logical answer is that they just aren't as absorbent as most active babies need to stay dry for a reasonable amount of time.
Pampers
After trying Huggies and Parent Choice, I wanted to write a love letter to Pampers! Seriously, sometimes you get what you pay for, but Pampers is the best of all worlds. A) they usually have decent coupons out there to cut the price dramatically. B) They hold in all Poop and Urine for a reasonable amount of time C) they fit (size appropriate) babies perfectly. For my infant, they have the cut out so that her little belly button won't get irritated or rubbed. For a little bit older baby, they have a strong sealing power around the legs and waste that won't let marks or leak on your child!
So, the votes are in... This Motivated Mommy suggests.....
PAMPERS!!!!! (If you want to stay clean, dry, smelling good, with a full wallet.. pampers is your brand!)

Dear Friends,
Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Kara, the Motivated Mommy. Life many of you, life has blessed me with a beautiful child, Emery. She is active, healthy, and happy. But, ladies, let's be honest here. Before we had children, we all thought that we were prepared for anything our new bundles of joy could throw at us; however, a couple of months later, we realize that there are lots of details that our mom and the parenting classes left out. We have questions about which products to use? How to handle various behaviors (like a child who fights bed time)? And so much more.
Good news! This blog is designed to help us explore these issues together. Let me a comment. Let me know what parenting issues you would like to see addressed. I will test products, ask professionals, and find answers to the modern mommy's most perplexing questions! Oh, yeah, and we are going to have a really good time on the way to enlightenment. Mommies need a community that they can count on. Well, you've got a friend in me, and this blog is here to help you!
